For this years Met, Anna Wintour wore a feathered look, embellished with crystals, a creation made by Chanel. The dress was significant for several reasons. Not only was Wintour pulling the theme back to its original inspiration, Sontag, in which her essay states, “Camp is a woman walking around in a dress made of 3 million feathers" and thus Wintour's dress inception was born, she was also paying a beautiful tribute to Karl Lagerfeld in the process.
Lagerfeld had begun making the dress before he passed away, Wintour told reporters at the Met, “Karl made it for me, and Virginie finished.”
Wintour was referencing Virginie Viard, who has worked along side Lagerfeld for over thirty years and has now taken the helm as artistic director.
Wintour spoke earlier this year at the Women in the World Summit 2019 saying how devastated she had been to learn of the passing of Lagerfeld. The day Wintour found out she was taking an early morning flight from London to Milan. Finding out by reading the papers that day she said she just, "started to bawl" before continuing, "Karl was just this force. There was no one, there is no one like Karl; he was a completely exceptional person.” And there was no better way to pay tribute to him.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE OTHER BEST DRESSED FROM THE NIGHT!
Lady Gaga!
We can't talk about the Met Gala without talk about Lady Gaga's red carpet looks, yes, that was plural- four to be exact and her incredible entrance that lasted 16 minutes! She was one of the first to arrive (after Anna Winour) and spent 16 minutes on the red carpet in a choreographed routine that saw her shrouded by dancers and the designer who created her dresses, Brandon Maxwell, who helped her shed each look before revealing the next. Lady Gaga who is one of the co-chairs of the gala and who helped pick the theme, clearly nailed it. Posing up a storm up and down the pink carpet stairs in each look! She absolutely won the night.
