BLIND BY JW INTERVIEW  #CROSSTHELINE

I’m always on the look out for new and exciting brands or designers, particularly ones that have an interesting backstory or an unusual design collaboration and BLIND by JW fits the bill on all counts.

BLIND by JW is the mastermind of designers Jessica Lau and Walter Kong. The company was founded in 2012 and is a fusion of both eastern and western design. Lau is a graduate of Central Saint Martins Art and Design College from London (CSM) and Kong a graduate from Polytechnic University in Hong Kong.

Lau was named, ‘Best emerging designer’ in London and has worked for some of the most prolific design houses in the world including Alexander McQueen, John Galliano and Diane von Furstenberg.
Kong won ‘The overall winner of Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers’ contest and has worked in many well-known fashion companies across China and Hong Kong.

The duo met when Lau came back to Hong Kong from the UK three years ago. She says she was, “determined to explore and to see how the biggest factories facilities in China work, a different area in fashion marketing, promotion, PR in Asia.” The collaboration began when Lau and Kong met in their workplace and decided they had the same vision and wanted to begin their own women’s wear label.

Picture
With their backgrounds a mix of both the east and the west, their collection has resulted in a beautiful style that captures the best of both. The tailoring, interesting silhouettes and beautiful fabric, many of which are adorned with graphics hand drawn by Lau and finished with Kong’s computer effects to make digital prints, has created a stunningly modern design aesthetic.

Lau’s background of working with some of the most important designers in the world before co-founding BLIND with Kong has certainly helped shape her design aesthetic now, she tells me it “allowed me to have the chance be very creative and to be able explore different ways and techniques in design/drawing/making samples/draping/embellishment/embroidery/fitting and styling. Being able to see beautiful fabric and workmanship from embellishments to different cuts allows me to see fashion from a different perspective. A collection starting from zero and finally seeing it on the catwalk is quite magical. As a result this influenced me to establish my own line and to be able to create and design a collection for real, all starting from zero.”

It’s with this background as well as Lau’s Chinese heritage that has resulted in the interesting partnership “Chinese has a very strong historical background and story. And design houses that I have worked in uses Chinese elements as their inspiration, from paintings to workmanship, which influenced me a lot and also I think it’s due to the fact that I grew up in London which makes me more interested and fascinated to know more about my Chinese heritage. Which is why I would like to use Chinese mix with British element as one of the main style to our brand, using hand drawn digital printing and lazer cut based on a story.” And it’s this fusion of both which sets Lau and Kong apart from many other brands. Kong adds, “I feel Hong Kong has a strong passion and encouragement, which enhances my way of working.”

Picture
Speaking of when Lau knew she wanted to start her own company she says it was, “when I created my first collection in my final year at CSM.” However Kong didn’t have the same story, “I never actually wanted to start my own label as I never did want to become a designer” However ironically it was Kong who made the suggestion of the collaboration, “We were working together on a collection and Walter messaged, saying how about we make our own collection together.” Lau recalls. They have their sights set high as they go into their third year of BLIND by JW, “Lets say we both have high hope in making our dream in changing how people see Hong Kong local fashion design and to be able to make it internationally.” They both say.

After deciding to begin the brand, the duo have not stopped moving towards their goals. Interestingly they started selling their collection in London first. Speaking about those first few months they tell me, “It was exciting and nervous at the same time, as we started everything from zero. We think it was because we had huge courage, which made it work in the end.  Creating a collection was only the very beginning. We took the collection and did a photo-shoot, bought two return tickets to London along with our first collection to see if anyone is interested. In the end we had a shop return our call (saying they) would like to put our debut collection in her shop.”

With experience in both markets, I ask Lau if she sees a difference in the Hong Kong customer to a European one, and Lau says. “Two years ago we (saw) Hong Kong generally more conservative on how they style (themselves), their buying behavior and how they see fashion. Europe they tend to have their own way of styling and experimenting different ways to mix and match clothes, more adventurous, whilst Hong Kong tends to follow rather than experiment.” However they are seeing a shift, “with local designers, fashion bloggers, boutiques/shops/online business coming up, more and more people in Hong Kong are more aware of the good designers in Hong Kong and are starting be more adventurous with their styling.”

Speaking of how they get inspiration for their collection they reveal, “We first brainstorm together and think of a story, looking through galleries, exhibition, events to get further inspiration for colors, textures, shapes, before deciding the overall outcome.” They describe what kind of a BLIND by JW girl is as “
a confident woman, knowing what she wants, like to social and be out there. Likes music, art, going to galleries, exhibition reading books and magazines.”

Picture

As for the meaning behind the name BLIND?, “We wanted people to remember our brand name and to have a deep meaning. And Blind is actually a curtain blind which you open up and can see the outside beautiful dream world (which is why our prints is all inspired by the outside gardens or woodlands) allows our girls wearing our clothes can wear their dream world.” And it seems Lau and Kong are living theirs, “Creating our collection and having our customer wearing our collection and appreciating our collection is our biggest accomplishment.”

With so many new and aspiring designers out there, I ask the Lau and Kong what would be the best advice they would give any new designer and what they should know before they start “Definitely need passion, be confident and don’t give up. Always remember, fashion is a very competitive industry, and to bring up your brand is easy but to sustain your brand is the hardest. No matter where you work, things won’t come easy, so you have to work very hard in order to (see) some results.”

I'm curious how they make their design viewpoints work so effortlessly together and they tell me,  “(we) both have the same vision and had always aim to work it out. “We do have arguments, but funny enough this actually can help us grow and improve our teamwork.”

With BLIND being stocked in London, Hong Kong and Singapore I wonder if they edit their collection to suit each location, “Yes, we have edited our collection for each place. But very little as we find our customers both in London and Hong Kong are actually quite similar.” I finally ask them what their plans are going forward and they say, “Lets say Hong Kong isn’t our full stop.” And having seen their latest collection, I certainly believe them.

I finally took a trip to Santa Barbara to go wine tasting, we stayed in Solvang, an idyllically quant little town.

For the wine tasting itself, first stop was Saarloos, which had an amazing cupcake and wine tasting pairing, and trust me when I say, they all went so well together! The tasting shop was also really sweet. Next stop was Byron a fantastic tasting shop that does incredible Pinots, the best I've ever had.

The third stop was Gainey Vineyards, before ending the last tasting at Sunstone, filming location of the movie Sideways and most recently the location for Lauren Conrad from 'The Hills' wedding. It was so beautiful outside. We bought lunch from the local bakery and ate outside. We then had dinner at Route 246 later on in the evening. Food there was really delicious and great atmosphere inside. The next day we went to Paula's pancake house. It was a bit of a wait as it's the most popular breakfast spot in town, but was definitely worth it. Such a perfect weekend!

South Korea is one of the fastest growing and most lucrative markets worldwide for designer fashion and luxury items. They have a huge influence on not only China but also the US and this hasn't gone unnoticed by Gucci.

Gucci have further tapped into the market by choosing South Korean actress Gianna Jun as the new face of their accessories ad campaign.  Jun is most famous for her role as “The Girl” in the 2001 romantic comedy, “My Sassy Girl”, one of Korea’s highest grossing comedies of all time.

The accessories campaign, which includes Jewelry, watches and eyewear, was shot by photographer Sølve Sundsbø in London over the weekend, and overseen by the creative director of Gucci, Frida Giannini.

Speaking of the choice to have Jun as the face of the campaign, which will be released in January 2015, Giannini said, "Gianna Jun has just the type of natural beauty and sensual sophistication that is perfect for a Gucci woman." continuing, "Her contemporary femininity is well suited to our accessories, which she will bring to life in this new campaign."

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY- POSES TOPLESS AND TELLS US WHY

Picture
Back in September, Keira Knightley posed topless for one of the six covers that were released for  Interview magazine shot by the wonderfully talented, Patrick Demarchelier. However Keira Knightley has now explained why she made the move to pose topless for the cover, saying that she would do a topless shoot as long as the image wasn't retouched. Speaking of her decision she said, "I've had my body manipulated so many different times for so many different reasons, whether it's paparazzi photographers or for film posters,"

Speaking of the shoot, she said, "That was one of the ones where I said: 'OK, I'm fine doing the topless shot so long as you don't make them any bigger or retouch.' Because it does feel important to say it really doesn't matter what shape you are."

One of the most obvious manipulations Knightley experienced was in the King Arthur movie poster where her chest had very clearly been enhanced.

Picture
Knightley is amongst several celebrities who have made a stand against the sheer amount of photoshopping that now takes place, other stars speaking up include, Beyonce who made a stand against H&M for photoshopping her famous curves, Kate Winslet for GQ Magazine, Ashley Benson & Troian Bellisario from Pretty Little Liars, on their promotional poster, and Brad Pitt for W Magazine. See the pics in question below, click image for further info.

Tuesday November 4th, Beyonce joined to celebrate the opening of Topshop's new flagship store in New York City on Fifth Avenue, looking stunning wearing an £80 ($130) Topshop dress. As previously reported on Eurasian Vogue, Beyonce has confirmed that she and Topshop owner Philip Green are working on a joint venture to create an athletic clothing line set to open in 2015.

During the store opening Beyonce told CNBC, “I’ve been such a huge fan for so many years. It’s just a natural thing for us.”

Cara Delevingne who is currently the face of Topshop was also in attendance, as well as Philip Green and the Green family. The New York store is the 2nd largest Topshop store boasting 4 levels, 3 of which are selling floors and spans an impressive 40,000 square feet and staffs 300 employees. The largest store still remains the original UK Topshop flagship store on Oxford street. However, Philip Green is making moves to make Topshop a big presence in the U.S. They just recently opened a store in San Diego, and also have stores in Chicago, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Speaking of their plans for growth in the US Philip Green said, "I'm not going to tell you the exact figures but we have got to take tens of millions of dollars here to make it work so it's a commitment . We opened in San Diego five days ago we're signed to go to Houston and Atlanta in the next 6 months. So we've put a stake in the ground – let's see how we can grow the business."

A FINAL FAREWELL TO OSCAR DE LA RENTA

11/3/2014

Today, the sun made an appearance for Oscar de La Renta as he was remembered in a private funeral, held in Manhattan, this Monday 3rd November. De la Renta sadly passed away on the 20th October after an eight year long battle against cancer.

The service, which took place in the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola at Park Avenue and 84th Street was attended by politicians, designers, as well as a string of other high profile public figures. Amongst them was, Anna Wintour  Hillary Rodham Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, Marc Mezvinsky
Hugh Jackman and Deborah Furness, Diane Sawyer, Mike Nichols, , Annie Leibovitz, Matthew Broderick who was also representing his wife Sarah Jessica Parker who couldn't attend due to filming in Italy. As well as Lauren Santo Domingo, Michael Bloomberg, Barbara Walters, Rupert Murdoch, Leonard Lauder, Aerin Lauder, Graydon Carter, Robbie Myers, Linda Wells, Grace Coddington and the First Lady of the Dominican Republic Cándida Montilla de Medina.

Mr. de la Renta had such a huge impact on the fashion world and this was reflected by so many of the most prolific designers in the world attending the funeral to remember Mr. de La Renta. They included Michael Kors, Tommy and Dee Hillfiger, Gucci Westman, Karlie Kloss, Ralph and Ricky Lauren, Tory Burch, Stephen Burrows, Vera Wang, Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammett, David Neville, Francisco Costa, Donna Karan, Diane von Furstenberg. The retail industry was also represented by the attendance of Ken Dowling, Marigay McKee and Stephen I. Sadove and Karen Katz,

Due to the high profile figures attending the funeral, the security surrounding the funeral was extremely high with barricades lining the perimeters of the church, and New York Police Department on hand to provide security. Even some Secret Service agents were there to ensure all those attending remained safe.

Speaking of the day, Steven Kolb said as he arrived, “It’s a sad day, obviously, and I just feel lucky in my short eight years at CFDA that I got to know somebody as kind and talented and important to the CFDA as Oscar,”

Linda Fargo also said, “It’s a sunny day for Oscar. Oscar’s still with us. It’s a bittersweet day. We (her colleague Joshua Schulman)  were just talking in the car ride over about how he was so elegant and set a bar for all of us. He handled his illness with such grace.”

Speaking after the service, Barbara Walters said, “It was a solemn, spiritual service commemorating a man who was so wonderful and giving,” .

Caroline Roehm said of of the service, “It was exquisitely beautiful and exquisitely sad,”  “But the lovely part is that you get to see so many old friends. I just saw someone who worked at Oscar with me in the Seventies. There’s just so much love here.”

It was so fitting that Oscar de La Renta's farewell ceremony was so reflective of the way he lived his life, with love, and elegance. He will be so sorely missed.
