ALEXIE ARTICLE: 10 MAKEUP TRENDS FOR AUTUMN / WINTER YOU NEED TO TRY BY STACY FAN

Picture

As we transition from Summer into the Autumn and winter months, not only does the colour pallet of our wardrobe change from light pastels to the introduction of darker hues of browns and olives, our makeup also follows suit. The runway has been awash with some gorgeous new makeup trends for us to try. Here we give you our top 10 trends to try out! Prepare to get autumn and winter makeup ready and bang on trend!

1)  Brown Smokey Eye

This week Victoria Beckham showed us her top makeup tricks as she partners up with Estée Lauder with the inclusion of a smokey eye and a gorgeous nude lip, autumn makeup perfection!

Picture

The smokey eye is nothing new, but this autumn and winter sees the updated version of the smokey eye in brown. It was all over the runway including Gigi Hadid sporting the look for Diane Von Furstenberg.
We’re particularly loving the brown smokey eye for and autumn and winter as it’s less overpowering than the black smokey eye we’ve seen in seasons past. It’s sexy and strong but subtle enough to be worn during the day and compliments the colour pallet of autumn perfectly. Estée Lauder’s newest pallet (below)  created with Victoria Beckham is offering the perfect tones to create the look.

Picture
  1. Use a brown eyeliner on the lower lashes and buff a warm brown eye shadow on the lower lid, taking the colour all the way to the corner of the lids, and blend up. For a heavier more dramatic look, use a small brush and ‘pack’ the colour in.
  2. Take a wide blending brush and using a lighter gold shadow, sweep across the upper lid. For the lower lids, use a dark brown eyeliner and line the entire bottom lid. For a more defined eye, take a black eyeliner, and go over the outer corners of the eyelid to create a cat eye shape.
  3. To create a brighter, more open look to the eye, use a highlighter in the inner corners of the eye. We recommend Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Brush on glow BB highlighter

2) Copper Eye

This autumn’s runway saw the introduction of the copper eye. If you’re a fan of a natural winter makeup look but still want a bit of an edge, this is the one for you. Subtle in tone but with a beautiful shimmer, this look will see you through from autumn to winter. It’s also perfect for those days when you need a makeup look to take you from day to night.
MAC Amber Lights Eye Shadow is the perfect colour to create the look.
  1. Take a small eyeshadow brush and gently ‘pack’ the colour on to the lower lid and blend upwards.
  2. Gently blend with a wide blending brush.
  3. To give a more dramatic look for the evening, take the eye shadow out to the outer corners of the eye and line the upper and lower lash line with a liquid eyeliner.

3) Peach Eye

An unexpected autumn trend this season is the peach eye. Less heavy than the normal autumn and winter colour we’re used to seeing, the peach eye gives a much lighter makeup look than the other trending options this season.
For this look, it’s important to start with a good eyeshadow primer. We recommend Mac Prep +Prime 24 hour Eye Base. Not only does it give a perfectly neutral base, it will keep your peach eyeshadow in place all day. The key with this look is to keep the look fresh and natural.
  1. Gently apply the peach eyeshadow on the lower lid and take it half way up the lid. For a truly fresh look, skip the eyeliner and instead take the peach eye shadow and blend it on the lower lid.
  2. Final step, apply mascara to the upper and lower lashes to make your eyes really pop.

4) Black and Flick

The black and flick trend is a perfect accompaniment to both the brown smokey and copper hues we are seeing this season.

Picture

  1. For an evening dramatic look take a liquid eyeliner pen and draw along the upper lash line, taking the line wider as you approach the outer corner of the eye.
  2. Reapply the brown or copper eye shadow to the lid and fill the colour above the outer eyeliner until it reaches the outer tip of the eyebrow.
  3. Layer on the mascara and your dramatic black and flick look is complete!

5) Coloured Eyeliner

If the winter weather usually gets you down, take a page out of Fendi’s (runway) book and brighten up your day with a coloured eyeliner. The perfect way to feel a little brighter even if the weather outside isn’t cooperating!
There are several options you can try out to complete this look, from some really bold standout colours of orange, electric or pastel blues, to a more subtle look by using a white eyeliner. This look also works perfectly with the peachy eyeshadow trend.
  1. Take your chosen eyeliner, and line the bottom eyelid, adding a heavier line on the inner eyelid.
  2. For a more dramatic look, line the upper lash lid with the eyeliner.
  3. To make your eyes really pop, use a liquid gel at the base of the upper lashes to create a strong contrast and defined lash line.

6) Pop Art

A trend that works perfectly with the coloured eyeliner is the ‘Pop Art’ trend seen at both Chanel and Fendi’s shows. With a mix of a smokey eye, bright colours and even textured netting below the brows, the eyes were definitely taking centre stage at both shows.
  1. To create a more wearable take on the trend, use an eyeshadow primer across the lid, apply a bright copper eyeshadow over the entire eye lid and blend upwards.
  2. Take a bright electric blue eyeliner and apply on the lower lash line.
  3. To really create the ‘Pop Art’ feel to the look, take a white eyeliner and and draw a line across the upper lash line taking it to the outer corner of the eyes. For a more dramatic look, the same can be done with a bright eyeshadow in place of the copper hue.

7) Glitter

Nothing screams Christmas more than glitter and apparently Tommy Hilfiger agrees. For his latest runway show he showed us how to wear it this winter in the chicest of ways.
  1. Begin with an eyeshadow primer and apply across the eyelid.
  2. Using a peach eyeshadow sweep it half way across the eye lid.
  3. Take a glitter eyeshadow, such as NYX COSMETICS Face & body glitter brilliants in gold and pat half way up the eyelid. Re-dab the brush and add extra glitter onto the inside corner of the eye for a subtle but striking look.

Coloured Lipstick Trend

One of the key trends for AW16 is the coloured lipstick. A super simple way to add a pop of colour to any look. This winters lipstick colours aren’t always about dark, a refreshing trend was seeing some bright winter make up on the runway.

Picture

8) Purple Lip

There’s no better time than autumn and winter to do a bold lip and this seasons hottest trend to try is the deepest red or black lipstick. Seen at Marc Jacobs runway show, the bold lip is giving a nod to 90’s goth makeup and has never looked better. This season look to invest in Tom Fords’s Violet Fatale.

 9) Orange Lip

Fendi was not only responsible for the trend of Pop Art this season but also the orange lip. A sure fire way to brighten an otherwise muted grey or brown outfit is to juxtapose it with a bright orange lip. We’re loving SHU UEMURA Kye sheer colour balm in Orange. It’s bright in colour but the balm base will keep lips luscious and moisturized at the same time!

10) Red Lip

We couldn’t have an autumn winter trend without the inclusion of a red lip! It’s a classic, and looks fabulous with an all black outfit and works for both day and night. Nars Audacious lipstick in Annabella will see you through in style.

The Best Eye Makeup Trends For Your Eye Colour

Picture
  •  Blue Eyes
Peach and Terracotta are two colours that work beautiful with blue eyes. They make your eyes a gorgeous focal point and the warm colour really accentuates your eyes. Apply a creamy peach eyeshadow over eyes for a truly fresh look. We recommend Mac’s Cream Colour Base in Light Beige with Peach. This eyeshadow comes in a creamy formula that gives you a beautiful peachy beige colour as well as a gorgeous fresh and dewy finish.

  • Green Eyes
A colour that works beautifully with green eyes is a strong electric bright blue. Using it above the upper lashes creates a great focus point of your makeup look and the colour contracts perfectly with your eyes and really makes them pop. Take a blue eyeliner, we recommend L’Oreal Paris Super Liner Midnight  across the upper lid and in one motion, line the lid, taking it out to a thicker edge on the corners of your eyes. Not only will you be nailing one of the trends this season, the colour will work perfectly against the green of your eyes.
  • Brown Eyes
Due to brown being considered a fairly neutral colour, those with brown eyes can wear most colours. However there are a couple of colours that make brown eyes really pop. As with green eyes, a bright blue really makes brown eyes stand out. The contrast between the bright electric colour and a darker shade will certainly draw attention to the feature of your eyes.
However if you are looking for a more subtle colour, a gold and beige tone works beautifully. Take a base colour of beige, we recommend Mac’s Cream Colour Base in Bronze and layer half way up the lid. Then take Mac’s Dazzle Shadow in ‘I like to watch’ and using a larger blending brush take a small amount of the product and dust over lids. For a stronger evening look use a small eye shadow brush and apply to the eye lids, applying more product on the lower lids and lightening the colour on the way up.

Daytime Looks for Autumn/Winter

When the weather begins to turn and temperatures drop, it’s important to remember our skin will be feeling the effects. Therefore during the colder months it’s a good idea to adjust the items we use on a daily basis on our face.
  • Less is more
Opt for a lighter foundation during winter or even better try a tinted moisturizer. Foundation can be really drying and if skin is already dry it won’t create a smooth finish. A great tinted moisturizer that still has good coverage is Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer. It’s heavier than your regular tint but still far lighter than a foundation. It also contains an SPF 30 which is important even during the winter.
  • Eye makeup
One great thing about eye makeup is you can go as heavy on defining eyes without ruining or drying skin. If you prefer a more made up look, choose a beige or gold colour on eyes for a warm finish. It’s perfect in autumn and winter. To make eyes sparkle and to add more of a Christmassy feel, use Mac’s Dazzle Shadow in ‘I like to watch’.
  • Setting Spray
Once your makeup is complete, use a setting spray. Urban Decay’s Chill Cooling Setting Spray is great all year round. Not only does it set makeup and stop it smudging, it also keep it looking gorgeous and dewy, the perfect finish for colder months. The spray works wonders on both dry and combination skin.

Evening/Christmas Party Looks

Christmas is the perfect time to go a little heavier on the glitter and shimmer than we would any other time of the year. The general rule of thumb of makeup is to never do two focal points in one look, however Christmas is a slight exception to the rule! One of the hottest trends for this seasons is a bold lip and a bold eye. Can’t do them together? Think again! Although too heavy for day and possibly any other time of year, for Christmas this look works so well.
  • Eyes
  1. Applying an eyeshadow primer such as Mac Prep +Prime 24 hour Eye Base
  2. Take a bronze pallet such as Mac’s Mineralizing eye shadow palette  and layer the darkest bronze colour across the bottom lid. Use a small brush and really pat the colour in giving a good solid base and definition to the lower lids.
  3. Next take the very top of a small brush and half way across the lid, layer a layer of the lighter bronze colour on. Gently blend the colours together.
  4. Taking the darker bronze colour apply the shadow to the top half of the eyelid, taking it out to the edges of the eye.
  5. Use a large blending brush, and blend the colours together.
  6. Apply a small amount of light gold shadow to the brush and sweep it all over the eyelid to create a smooth blended look.
  7. For added definition, use a liquid eyeliner and run a line across the top lashes.
  8. Apply eyeliner to the lower lids.
  9. Take a small eyeshadow brush, using a small amount of a dark gold eyeshadow apply to the lower lashes, sweeping across to create a really bold eye.
  10. Apply mascara
  • Eyebrows
Fill in eyebrows to create a great shape and definition to eyes. The key is to use a light hand and build the product up. Strong eyebrows help to balance out your bold eyeshadow too.
  1. Take an eyebrow brush and gently tap into eyebrow colour. A great product is RMK’s Powder Eyebrow  which comes with a brush to apply and blend. Begin in the inner eyebrow and work your way out.
  2. Use the other side of the brush to blend. Go lightly and build up as necessary.
  • Foundation
When doing a heavy eye, it’s always advisable to do your foundation last. Eyeshadow is likely to fall during the application, and once your foundation is set it will smear your look.
Carefully apply your usual foundation, being careful not to smudge your eyes. Don’t go too heavy, just enough to allow a smooth coverage and balance out the boldness of your eyeshadow.
  • Lips
Nothing screams Christmas like a red lip. This season sees the red and purple lipstick as the colour of the season. Create a really dramatic look by blending both colours together for a gorgeous rich and party ready look
  1. Take a lipstick brush. Sweep some red Lipstick on to the brush. We love Lipstick Queen’s Sinner Lipstick. Begin by applying the product to the outside of the lips, following the lines of your lips and work your way in.
  2. Take Tom Ford’s Violet Fatale and layer over the lips, particularly focusing on the centre of the lips. It will create a great deep blend of colours and the two colours mixed together help balance each other out.

  • Eyeshadow
Mac’s how Royal is a must have for both autumn and winter. It can be used as both an eye shadow and an eyeliner and can be used to create the ‘Pop Art’ and the ‘Coloured Eyeliner’ trends. Simply use with a small eyeshadow brush and line the lower lid for a coloured eyeliner.

  • Contour Pallet

In recent years the world has gone crazy for contouring! One we absolutely trust is Mac – All The Right Angles Contour Kit.  It’s creamy texture is great for creating and blending strong lines.

  • Prep + Prime BB Beauty Balm Compact SPF 30
One of the best BB creams on the market is Mac’s Prep and Prime; blurring away imperfections even before you’ve laid your first dab of foundation on. It helps conceal uneven colour, and gives you a subtle glow. It’s important to remember UV rays can still be strong during autumn and winter. Therefore products with SPF 30 are definite must haves in your makeup bag.

Skin Routines for Winter

  • Winter Makeup Tips For Dry Skin.

The best tip for a flawless makeup look is to start with a good skincare routine. To avoid skin drying out during the colder months switch up your autumn and winter makeup routine as well as your skin care routine.
The best time to let your skin breath and replenish is at night, and the way to maximize this process is by using night time serums. Not only will your face feel more hydrated in the morning, it will give you a much cleaner smooth base to apply your makeup.
Serum recommendations
One of the most talked about serums in recent years has been Boots No 7. serum. Reasonably priced at £27.o0 (or often 2 for 3 deals at Boots) It’s a fantastic product to use both morning and night. Simply remove all your makeup, and apply evenly over the entire face. The No 7 serum works best when used in conjunction with either the No 7 day care cream for the daytime, or the Restore and Renew cream at night.
For a more intense night serums, try Estée Lauder’s night repair or Kiehl’s Midnight recovery. They both do wonders for helping to repair skin while you sleep. Plus they will help give you a perfect skin base to try out those winter trends! Apply on clean skin and then moisturize with a night time cream.

A quick guide to getting the perfect autumn / winter trend spot on
  • For Autumn makeup don’t be afraid to use colour. It’s a great way to brighten up an outfit in gloomier months.
  • Winter eye makeup is a great time to try out a darker lip and bold eye together.
  • When considering winter formal makeup, avoid using glitter, instead use a gold eyeshadow with a shimmer.
  • Deep winter makeup works really well with an all black outfit. It will make your look pop and add a touch of drama to your look.
  • For winter, go for a dewy look to create a bright winter makeup look. Opt for a tinted moisturizer and peachy tones.
  • Winter eyeshadow colours such as golds, and browns will give you a ‘made-up look’ without wearing too much makeup.

Some things to remember before deciding on what makeup look to choose :
  • Always choose your outfit before making a decision on your makeup choice
  • When using the glitter trend, be sure to start off with a light application and build up.
  • If you need a look that will take you from day to night, opt for a brown smokey eye that can be built up and topped up before heading out for the evening.
  • When doing a heavy black eyeliner, be sure to also balance the look by using an eyebrow pencil to even out the boldness of the eye.

THE NUDE LIPSTICK TREND

In 2008 the nude lipstick was seen as a trending makeup look. It was the year it was all over the autumn, winter runway; Bobby Brown even dedicated an entire line to the trend called Shimmering Nude and Nars also brought out a collection of neutral lip colours.
Fast forward eight years and the nude lip has become as classic as the red lip. Why? It’s sexy, still draws attention to your lips but allows you to wear a bold eye or a strong cheek colour at the same time. It goes from day to night perfectly and works with pretty much any hairstyle. It also suits every skin complexion. You just have to find the right shade for you! Here we give you the low down on what types of nude lipsticks are available and what one to buy no matter your budget or skin tone!

Types of Nude Lipstick

Nude Matte Lipstick
One of the chicest, subtle yet sexy ways to do the nude lipstick look is with a matte nude lip. It draws attention to the centre of your face, and works so well with a bold eye makeup look! We are loving Tom Ford’s lipstick in Blush Nude  to create a gorgeous, nude matte finish.

Picture
Nude Lipgloss

If you want to ease yourself into the nude lipstick trend, a great way to do this is with a lipgloss. It doesn’t make a big statement in quite the same way as a matte finish does but still looks uber sexy and glamours! We love Long-Wear Lip Topper by Jouer Cosmetics  It leaves lips beautifully moisturised whilst giving lips a golden-nude glimmer.

Picture

Pink Nude Lipstick

Even more subtle than the other nude lipsticks available, and one that works with your makeup look all year round is a pink nude lipstick. We love Tom Ford’s Spanish Pink. It’s a colour that doesn’t wash you out, even in the winter months but will bring out a tan in summer. It’s appropriate for most occasions, from day to night and is the perfect way to draw attention to your lips, yet subtle enough to wear to the office.

Picture
Brown Nude Lipstick

If you are after a look that is a little more glamorous and stand out, this colour is calling your name! Unlike the nude, or pinky nude hues this one definitely draws the attention to your lips, and makes them a central focal point. It also looks great with a bronzed cheek and gold and brown eyeshadow. Give NYX Lip Lingerie Lipstick in Beauty Mark  a shot for that sexy siren look.

Picture

Best Nude Lipsticks for your Complexion

One of the greatest things about the nude lip is that it suits everyone! You just have to pick the colour that works best for your skin tone. Here we give you a rundown of the colours that work for you no matter what completion you have!

Picture
Best Nude Lipstick for Pale Skin

You might be afraid to try out a nude lip as you think it will wash you out, but you’d be wrong! If you have pale or fair skin go for a slightly pink colour. You could also opt for a slightly peachy orange tone. This ensures that you won’t look wiped out, and will make sure the colour will still stand out on your lips! For a great pinky nude go for a Laura Mercier Lip Lip glacé. For a slightly more orange, peach tone try Yves Saint Laurent Rouge pur couture lipstick. Not only is it the most gorgeous colour, it also contains an SPF 15.

Picture

Best Nude Lipstick for Olive Skin

There are a couple of options for olive skin. A taupe colour looks beautiful, but if you want to bring out the natural golden colour of your skin, you can opt for a beige nude lipstick with a touch of gold for a chic and polished look. DIOR NUDE Rouge Lipstick is a beautiful colour to create this look.

Picture

Best Nude Lipstick for Dark Skin

One of the most beautiful colours to use on darker skin tone is a dark brown slightly golden / metallic hue that will bring out the shape of your lips. Ensure that the colour isn’t too light or else it might look like foundation or concealer on the lips and not create the desired effect. Try Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Color In Totally Toffee to create a beautiful stand out nude tone.

Picture

Best Nude Lipstick for Asian Skin

For an Asian skin tone, a great colour to opt for is a honey tone. Sometimes a peach can wash you out, however a honey colour really adds warmth to the complexion and still gives the nude effect to the lip. We love NARS Satin Lipstick In Honolulu Honey and works for both a fairer completion as well as a golden more olive tone.

How To Complete The Nude Lipstick Trend

Picture
PREPERATION

Get your lips nude lipstick ready with these fail-safe rules to lock in your lipsticks.

  • Exfoliate Lips
Begin by exfoliating lips. There is nothing worse that starting a lip colour with flaky lips as the lipstick won’t go on smoothly. A good product to exfoliate lips is Clinique’s Sweet Pots Sugar Scrub & Lip Balm

  • Apply Primer
To get the truest colour from your lipstick it’s recommended that you apply a primer to lips to give a neutral base. We recommend TOO FACED Lip insurance lip primer. This product will prep your lips with a hydrating, quick-drying formula that will also help lock in your lip colour and even stops the colour transferring when it’s coffee hour.

  • Moisturise
After prepping lips, it’s a good idea to moisture lips to give a good base for the lipstick. A wonderful product for lips is Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Moisturizing Cream. It’s gentle and really soothes lips.

  • Apply Lipstick
After prepping lips apply lipstick. The best way to ensure you create a beautiful line for your lips is to take a lipstick liner in a matching tone to the lipstick of your choice. The key here is to not line the entire mouth as this won’t create a perfect blended look. Instead take the liner and line the cupids bow of your lips and the sides of the mouth. Then take the lipstick and apply over lips.

Things to Remember When Wearing a Nude Lipstick

Pick the best nude lip colour for your skin tone. There is a colour out there to suit all skin types
  • If you are blonde avoid washing your complexion out by using a peach colour
  • If you’re a brunette, opt for a slightly golden hue to bring out the dark tone of your hair
  • Olive skin beauties, use a slightly metallic lipstick to give yourself a golden glow
  • For the perfect nude lip, be sure to prepare lips by using an exfoliator for lips and then primer
  • When using a nude lipgloss be sure to use the right tone for your skin
  • There are plenty of cheap nude lipsticks available including Rimmel, L’oreal and Maybelline
  • The nude lip is a new classic, alternate a strong red for the nude lip and still be party ready!
  • Don’t be afraid to do a strong eye with your nude lip. Both work so well together!

When using a blusher, choose one that works well with the undertone of your skin color. The best way to use the correct color is by choosing one that matches the color of your skin when you have a natural glow. Apply to the apples of cheeks with a brush and sweep upwards.

  • Mascara

Before applying mascara use an eyelash curler on eyelashes. Clamp down on eyelashes for approx. 20 seconds. Next apply mascara. To avoid clumping apply by using a side to side motion and finally sweep up.

  • Eyeshadow

Make the most of your eyes by knowing what color goes best with your eye color. By using a shade that is the opposite of your own eye color will help make them ‘pop’. The most flattering color for green eyes are pinky, or violet shades, gold and bronze hues are perfect for brown eyes, and for blue eyes, silver and grey shadows work best.

  • Lipstick

To ensure your lipstick stays put, take a dab of foundation and apply it to you your lips and apply over as you would a lip balm. Be sure to smooth it out evenly. Next blot your lips with a tissue, and then apply lipstick. This will not only help it last a lot longer, it will also give it a good color base to help make your color of choice stand out more!

PREGNANCY ETIQUETTE : THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER SAY OR DO TO EXPECTANT MOTHERS

For many women, finding out they are pregnant, given the right situation can be the most incredible time. However it can also be a time with a huge amount of apprehension as her life within ten months will never be the same again.

It’s therefore a very sensitive time for a woman. As her body changes, hormones increase and a woman’s fear of wanting to do ‘the right thing’ before the baby has even made an appearance becomes the most important thing on her mind. From what she puts in her body to what equipment to buy for the baby, to how to care for them when she eventually brings them home. There is a lot to contemplate.

Whilst it’s certainly one of the most amazing things a woman will ever experience, and some women sail through pregnancy, it can also be a hard time for some, with morning sickness (that can actually be all day long sickness for several months) and unbelievable tiredness. On top of this, people have a tendency to treat pregnant women very differently once they find out she is expecting.

It’s easy when you’ve never been pregnant or have been close to someone who has been / is pregnant, to know what one should and shouldn’t say. So save your pregnant friends, family members, stranger’s on the streets feelings by taking note of some common etiquettes to follow when talking to any woman who is pregnant.

SHOULD YOU BE EATING / DRINKING THAT?

Picture

A woman, upon finding out she is pregnant will no doubt have already begun researching what they can and can’t eat at great lengths. Most have already gone through several OBGYN appointments by the time you've even found out they are expecting and will have a full list of items they can’t eat during pregnancy. See them drinking a cup of coffee? It’s probably the one cup they are allowed a day, or perhaps it’s a decaf. Soft cheese? She probably checked it was pasteurized. Tuna? Perhaps one of her portions for the week. It’s very easy to judge without knowing, so don’t do it. A woman is more than aware of what is going on with her body and won’t be putting her baby in harms way for that cup of coffee. Trust.

WOW, YOU ARE SMALL. IS YOUR BABY HEALTHY?

Women come in different shapes and sizes and as such will carry differently. A woman’s ‘bump’ size is by no means indicative of her baby’s size or indeed health. She could be small carrying a very average sized baby, or she could be carrying fairly large (lots of fluid perhaps) but be having a small baby. Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe (above) was very compact throughout both her pregnancies and went on to have an almost 8 pound baby.

A woman knows what she is eating, is probably staying active and chances are she is doing all she can to keep her baby healthy. Any problems? Let the OBGYN notify her. Equally don’t comment on a woman’s large bump. "Are you carrying twins?" is a definite no, no, for obvious reasons.

WHERE ARE THE BUMP PICTURES? SEND THEM / POST THEM!!!

Many women love to show of their bodies when pregnant. However there are some women that simply don’t want to. Perhaps she’s happy to keep her pregnancy as private as possible with her and her partner during this very special time, or perhaps doesn't want to flaunt her changing shape. In addition some women are sensitive to the fact that some of their friends are struggling to have children and simply don't want to cause more hurt by filling their social media feed with baby bump shots.

But most important to remember, a woman’s body is still her own when she becomes pregnant. She hasn't suddenly just become an incubator. It’s not a bump, it’s her body and as such if she hasn’t offered said ‘bump’ picture, don’t ask. It's just awkward. I've heard from many women they find it a very odd request with many feeling that they are being asked so people can judge or compare their bodies, or their ‘bump’ size to other peoples. If a friend asked you for a picture of your boobs would you send it? Probably not. A woman’s stomach isn’t any different. Remember it’s not actually the baby you're asking to see. It’s her body, and not suddenly everyone else’s to inspect and gawk at just because she’s pregnant.

STARING AT A WOMAN'S STOMACH INSTEAD OF HER FACE

Much like a woman with big boobs and that’s all people see, many people begin to choose to stare at a woman’s stomach before even acknowledging her. Particularly when they are friends or an acquaintance and know they are expecting and are enjoying ‘bump watch’. Again, remember she is still her, not just a pregnant woman and probably doesn’t want to be looked up and down to see if she's 'grown' before you even say hello to her.

OHH.. YOU'RE HAVING A BOY, I BET YOU REALLY WANTED A GIRL!

Picture

Pre-judging someone’s reaction to whether she is having a boy and wants a girl (or vice versa) is highly insulting. I have heard from expectant mothers some horror stories on this subject. When a woman is having a baby she probably has no preference whatsoever on what sex she is having and purely wants a healthy baby. Saying that she must be really ‘disappointed’ to be having a boy / girl is probably the worst thing you can say. Being lucky enough to carry a child for most women is such a joy and having someone inflict their thoughts and feelings on her is not wise. Particularly when paired with, “Better luck next time", "Oh what a shame. Girls are so fun to dress up, such cute girl clothes" or "She could of helped in the kitchen, we need more cooks.” (I told you, horror stories..) A mother-to-be is already in love with her baby and this is a genuine hurt to the heart for her. Don’t-say-it.

SHOULD YOU BE WORKING OUT? HOW LONG ARE YOU GOING TO BE DOING THAT FOR?

It’s a very old school of thought that women shouldn’t exercise when pregnant. New research has shown that it is extremely beneficial for women to continue exercising throughout pregnancy for as long as she can. Providing she was fit and well before becoming pregnant, she should continue to exercise. It not only helps keep her weight healthy and relives stress, it actually strengthens the baby’s heart during his or her development and well after s/he is born. It also helps reduce the chance of gestational diabetes for the mother and it will hugely help her labor as well as recovery after. So don’t throw a judgmental glance at her when she’s in the gym. She’s doing it for her and her baby and carrying an extra several pounds of baby when lifting those weights whilst she's at it.

GRABBY-GRABBY

I have heard endless stories from pregnant women about pure strangers coming up to them in supermarkets, café’s, etc and rubbing their stomachs. Again, much like the request for those elusive bump pictures, just because a woman is pregnant, doesn’t suddenly make her body open to the public. Best to keep your hands off the bump!

LABOR HORROR STORIES

No woman needs to know your labor horror story. Unless you are very close and they explicitly ask for the graphic details wanting to know a worst case scenario, keep it to yourself. Everyone has a different experience (even from a woman's first child to her second) so just because you had a bad birth doesn’t mean her experience will be the same. Give her tips on what helped you through labor, but don’t give her all the gory details unless she has asked.

INUNDATING HER WITH CALLS / TEXTS AROUND THE TIME SHE IS DUE

Picture

A dear friend of mine told me when her due date approached she was so sick of getting calls and texts during that time. Particularly as a first time mother, babies are generally late (often up to two weeks) so getting calls and texts from friends, aunts, grandmas, grandfathers and in laws asking if there is any sign yet, whilst she herself is about ready to pull her hair out for waiting, is probably the last thing she needs. Fear not, the proud parents will be sure to tell you when the baby is ready to be introduced to the world.

YOU'RE CALLING THEM WHAT?!

Choosing a name for a child is one of the most important decisions a parent is making on behalf of their child. It's an incredibly hard decision to make and it's impossible to have everyone love the choice of their child's chosen name. Unless it genuinely is verging on child cruelty, best to keep your opinion on their choice of name to yourself.

UNWANTED ADVICE

Another pet peeve I’ve heard over and over from pregnant women; showering unwanted advice on how to raise her child. Each parent has a different lifestyle to the next and as a result will have to raise their child in a different way to the way you may choose (or chose) to raise yours. Doesn’t mean it’s wrong, it’s just different. Each baby is different and the same practices that work on one (even with twins) will not work on the next. Let her decide how to raise her child her way. A mother’s instinct is generally the best one, and she knows what is best for her child. Attachment parenting, co-sleeping or moving the baby out of the parents room after a month? All the parent’s choice and not your place to say whether you think this is the right way or wrong way.

ALEXIE ARTICLE: MASCARA AND THE DAMAGE IT DOES TO YOUR EYELASHES BY STACY FAN

5/22/2017

Picture
Mascara is one of most common items in a woman’s makeup bag, promising to make eyelashes look thicker, longer and flutterier.

However, with many of us wearing mascara every day, is there any truth behind the claims that – horror of horrors – mascara makes eyelashes fall out?

Picture

Is Mascara Bad For Your Lashes?

When used correctly, mascara shouldn’t thin or cause any major eyelash loss. However, if you are using the wrong product for your eyes or using the product incorrectly it could be harming your eyelashes.

My Eyelashes Keep Falling Out: What Causes This?
Do you ever wonder why your eyelashes are thinning or falling out? Below are some of the reasons you might be losing lashes:
  • Using the Wrong Product
When choosing your eye makeup, try to be aware what mascara is made out of and avoid anything that is petroleum-based. Petroleum is not only harsh on sensitive eyes, but also may affect the growth of your eyelashes. Switching to hypoallergenic and organic mascaras will ensure your eyelashes aren’t being stripped of moisture and won’t effect the growth of eyelashes the way other more chemical based mascaras might.
  • Using Waterproof Mascara
Waterproof mascara is drying on the eyes and is extremely hard to remove. You may not realise it at the time, but during the removal process you might actually be pulling your eyelashes out. Avoid using it everyday and only use when necessary.
  • Using a Product Too Frequently
Did you know that mascara should be replaced every 2-3 months? Eye makeup is more prone to bacteria build up than other cosmetic products – after all, the brush is used daily without being cleaned. Not only will an out-of-date product risk your eyelashes falling out, but also it might have an adverse effect on your vision. As with our skin, eyelashes need time to breathe. If you are using mascara daily, they are rarely getting a break and this will cause them to dry out. Avoid using mascara on days you are at home, and never leave your mascara on overnight.
  • Using Too Much Mascara
Although lashings of mascara will give your eyes a beautiful and dramatic look, it’s not great for the health of your lashes. Using too much mascara will eventually wear your lashes out as they will need to be cleaned more rigorously to ensure the product is fully removed.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR EYELASHES

Avoid using harsh eye makeup cleansers to remove makeup.
  • One of the best new products available is Bliss Fabulous Makeup Melt Gel-to-Oil Cleanser. It removes all makeup, including waterproof mascara, gently and easily.
Try natural alternatives to traditional eye makeup remover.
  • If you’ve ever wondered how to remove mascara naturally, coconut oil is a great option for removing eye makeup. It’s not only easy on the eyes and skin, but also helps lock in moisture.
Remove your eye makeup in the right way.
  • It is important to know how to remove mascara and eye makeup correctly. Soften the product on your face and eyes by washing with warm water. Apply the makeup remover on to a cotton pad and using a gentle downward motion on the eyelid start to remove makeup.
  • Never run upwards or in a hard, rigorous motion as this will result in eyelashes falling out.
Use Vaseline on eyelashes.
  • Did you know: Vaseline is the best clear mascara on the market (seriously!) and, used once or twice a week, gives your eyelashes a much-needed treatment. Apply with either a clean finger or a new, unused mascara wand. Gently wash off in the morning using your normal makeup remover.
The best mascaras that won’t damage your eyelashes:
  • Origins Brightening Mascara to Lengthen & Lift is a great option to avoid damaging eyelashes. It lasts all day, doesn’t clump and won’t irritate sensitive eyes.
  • Organic Glam Natural Mascara is free from artificial colours, fragrances and preservatives. This mascara also contains vitamins A,E and C, organic aloe and beeswax to moisturise lashes while you use it.
  • Maybelline New York Great Lash Mascara is hypoallergenic, contact lens safe and conditions as it thickens your lashes.

ALTERNATIVE options to mascara

LVL

WHAT IS IT?

LVL is a treatment that straightens your natural eyelashes at the root. Unlike a traditional lash perm it promises to create the look of longer, lifted lashes in 40 minutes, with immediate results. The treatment effect lasts 6-8 weeks.

PROS

The result is a ‘mascara-type effect’, so you don’t have to use products on your eyelashes on a daily basis. It gives women with flat eyelashes added volume and the treatment doesn’t make eyelashes brittle.

CONS

The treatment costs around £45 depending on the salon you visit, which can get pricey if you plan on doing it every 6 weeks.

EYELASH TINTING

WHAT IS IT?

Eyelash tinting is a treatment which involves applying dye to eyelashes to make them appear darker and fuller. Salons will insist on a patch test at least 24 hours in advance to make sure you have no allergies. Dye is applied with a disposable eyelash wand and the treatment takes around 20 minutes.

PROS

The waterproof colour lasts 6-8 weeks, depending on how fast your eyelashes grow, and with a variety of colours to choose from you are likely to find one that suits you. Tinting helps balance the features of your face and is particularly good if you have very light or fair eyelashes. If you are allergic to mascara or wear contact lenses and find it creates a reaction with your eyes, it’s a great alternative.

CONS

Despite delivering a slightly more defined appearance for those seeking the natural look, tinting doesn’t create a thicker or fuller lash, so fake eyelashes or mascara is still needed. The colour may fade out before the 6-8 weeks as you wash your face, and the tint may cause you to have an allergic reaction if you happen to be sensitive to dyes. Doing a skin spot test 24 hours prior to your appointment is always recommended. The process can get expensive if you are tinting your eyelashes every month, with prices starting around £20 for the treatment.

eyelash EXTENSIONS

WHAT IS IT?

If you love the look false eyelashes give you but don’t like reapplying them every time you have a big event or a night out, you may be tempted to try semi-permanent eyelash extensions.
The process involves applying either a synthetic, silk or mink fibre individually to your real lashes one by one with adhesive, to create a naturally long looking eyelash. Depending on what style you choose, the process can take anywhere between 2-3 hours. The lashes should last between 2-3 weeks before needing to be filled in. For those wanting to keep up with their eyelash extensions it’s recommend you don’t wait any longer than three weeks before having a fill in. Those who go back regularly to a salon won’t have to have a whole new set applied.

PROS

Eyelash extensions will give you a glamorous flutter without the need for mascara each day. It will save you time in the morning and give you a touch of glamour even when you aren’t wearing any other products.

CONS

Despite how beautiful eyelash extensions look there are several cons:

1. Time

People rave about how long eyelash extensions save them in the morning, but what is often left out is the time it takes to apply them in the first place. It can take up to 3 hours to apply the individual lashes for a full set, and then you’ll need to re-visit the salon every 2-3 weeks for infills.

2. High Maintenance

To keep your lashes looking good requires a decent amount of maintenance. Aside from the infills mentioned above, every few weeks, you are also limited on certain products you can use on your face. Oil based products aren’t recommended as it may remove the adhesive on your lashes. You must also be careful when removing makeup to avoid pulling the extensions out.
When showering, it’s important not to let water directly hit your eyes. Be careful when drying your face with a towel, too, as harsh rubbing will pull at the eyelash extensions.

3. Cost

In addition to the maintenance required, eyelash extensions are expensive. A full set at a London salon costs from £80-£130, with infills costing around £50, depending on the salon.

CELEBRITIES WHO WEAR FAKE EYELASHES

If you have problems with your eyelashes you aren’t alone. In fact, both Towie star Samantha Faiers (who has launched her own range of fake eyelashes which you can buy here) and actress Olivia Munn have openly discussed losing eyelashes due to trichotillomania.
Picture

What is Trichotillomania?

One of the lesser talked about reasons for having no eyelashes is trichotillomania. This is a repetitive disorder of pulling out hair, including eyelashes, and is particularly rife during stressful periods.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Samantha Faiers said of the disorder, “It is hard to explain. I do it without thinking; when I am nervous or bored or even when I am asleep; I don’t even realise I am doing it.”
Olivia Munn has also spoken out about the anxiety that causes her trichotillomania to occur, telling The New York Post in 2012, “If I were to walk into someone’s birthday party, I’d have a bad anxiety attack. I don’t bite my nails, but I rip out my eyelashes. It doesn’t hurt, but it’s really annoying. Every time I run out of the house, I have to stop and pick up a whole set of fake eyelashes.”
As of yet there has been no medication approved for the treatment of trichotillomania. If you think you may have this then please speak with your doctor about the options available to you.

Eyelash Regrowth

What can you do if you are losing eyelashes or find them rapidly thinning?
Many people swear by Latisse for eyelash regrowth. Used on the base of the eyelashes, this product creates longer lashes, although the effects are not permanent. Latisse is a version of a glaucoma drug used in an eye drop called bimatoprost. The product can be used on the upper lids, but should not be used on the lower lids. There have been cases of eye colour and eyelids darkening whilst using the product.
Picture
There are also a new generation of mascaras on the market that are makeup and eyelash regrowth treatments all in one. Yes, that’s right: mascara that makes your eyelashes grow is finally here. Hurrah! The best of the bunch are Lancome Hypnôse Precious Cells Mascara, which promises longer, denser lashes after 28 days, and L’Oreal Paris Double Extension Renewal Serum Mascara, a combined serum and mascara that gives eyelashes a fortifying boost.
Common Questions Regarding Healthy Eyelashes

Do eyelashes grow back?

Generally speaking, yes! If you lose an eyelash then a new hair will grow back from the follicle and replace the other hair.

How long does it take for eyelashes to grow back?

It usually takes about 7-8 weeks for eyelashes to grow back.

Why are my eyelashes falling out/what causes eyelashes to fall out?

There are numerous reasons for eyelashes to fall out; an unbalanced diet can be one of the reasons as well as using too many harsh products (including too much mascara which you vigorously rub off) on your eyelashes. Always be sure to gently remove any eye makeup at night to avoid drying your eyelashes out.

How many eyelashes do we have?

It will vary from person to person, but on average people have 150-200 on the upper lid and somewhere between 75-100 on the lower lid.

Do eyelashes grow back after lash extensions?

If you notice that you’re losing eyelashes during the process or after removal, don’t worry: they will grow back! They only grow about 1cm every 2-4 weeks so it may take time for you to notice.

How many eyelashes do we lose a day?

Everyone loses around 1-4 eyelashes a day, but this is dependent on how you look after your eyelashes.

Is it bad to sleep with mascara on?
One of the worst things you can do for your lashes is sleep with your mascara on. It dries them out, weakens them and may well cause them to break and fall out. Always remove your makeup before bed.

How long does mascara last?

Mascara has a shelf life of only around 2-3 months. As soon as you notice it getting clumpy, it’s time to toss it out!

How do I make my eyelashes longer, thicker and flutterier?

Like all things related to health, it starts from the inside. If you’re wondering how to make your eyelashes longer and thicker, eating a balanced diet with lots of vegetables and fruit is the place to start. For a helping hand, a clear mascara or eyelash primer can be worn underneath your favourite mascara (after all, the very purpose of clear mascara is to give your lashes a little bit of curl – which is why it can also be worn independently when you want to look super natural). Occasionally give your eyelashes the day off, too, and always opt for organic, hypoallergenic mascara.
