THE DENIM HUNT IS OVER: PARKER SMITH JEANS

2/28/2018

AVA SKINNY- ASTOR

We’ve all been there, standing in a department store’s denim section going to each different brand to see which jean will be our ‘perfect fit’. As you go into the changing room you try on one pair that fit perfectly around the waist but are too baggy on the thighs; A pair that fit perfectly on the thighs if only they were a half an inch wider on the waist. You leave the changing room having tried on 20 pairs of jeans, feeling like you’ve just done a work out, and walk out of the store empty handed feeling a little bit rubbish.

You peruse the magazine that says, ‘Find your Perfect Jean Whatever Your Shape’ with the individual titles ‘Ideal for the Athletic Figure’, ideal for ‘ Curvy’. Well, what about a brand that fits all body types, a brand that has a contour band that flatters all shapes, and that has a 10.5 inch rise to be practical for a working mum to a woman in her twenties running errands and not wanting the dreaded builders bum? Well step up Mary Ellen Moschetti of Parker Smith Jeans.

BUTTON STRAIGHT- SHADOW JEANS

You see Moschetti knows what women are looking for. Having originally planned to market her jeans to women from 35-40 and above, Moschetti, like so many others thought that jeans couldn’t be universal. However after gathering her friends of all shapes and sizes, her young slim neighbor who had just had a baby, as well as the women in her team of all shapes and sizes and varying age ranges to try out the different jeans, Moschetti knew she was on to something. Her jeans looked good on everyone.

It’s a refreshing idea, from the CEO whose background isn’t in fashion, but knows exactly what her customer wants. A classic pair of reliable jeans, that focuses on the three ‘F’s’, fabric, fashion and fit.

Moschetti has put her jeans through vigorous testing herself. Her designer, Selina Tahmasian, called Moschetti up in England whilst she was there traveling, “Wear the bombshell jeans from London Heathrow-to LA’s LAX and let me know...” Moschetti did, planning on taking the jeans off half way though the flight if she needed to, however she ended up doing the entire 12 hour flight wearing them. Upon landing she called her team, “We’ve got it, this fabric is perfect.”

Since then, the most popular style has been, unsurprisingly, ‘The Bombshell’. So well constructed and so comfortable that it has been not just Moschetti’s favorite jean but the celebrity go to jean for travel the last few years. Gigi Hadid is a huge fan. Despite being gifted items on the daily, Hadid has several pairs of Parker Smith Jeans and is often seen striding through LAX in her Bombshell’s, compliment indeed for a celebrity who has a whole wardrobe filled with denim.

Other celebrities include everyone from Miranda Kerr to Tyra Banks, another testament to the jeans fitting such a variation of body types. I too can attest to the comfort of the jeans. I wore the Bombshell from LA-Hong Kong, an almost 16 hours flight and felt like I was sitting in a pair of leggings.

The price point of the denim runs from $130-$220 for the more expensive Italian fabric, a worthy price for a pair of jeans that has the perfect amount of stretch that won't bag out after a few wears.

So if you’re looking for the perfect pair of jeans, I’m going to go out on a limb and say your hunt might well be over. From their classic denim, that can be worn with a sharp blazer for work attire, to their slightly more trend focused pieces for the weekend, such as the twisted bombshell, there is something for everyone and for every body shape.

This was the third show at New York Fashion Week showcasing the current Spring 2018 collections of the fashion and accessories designers who make up the community of Flying Solo; an organization that has redefined New York City retail. This season, the brand partnered with noted stylist and Creative Director Farren Jean Andrea to art direct, choreograph, and bring his creative vision to over 270 looks from the 70 designers from over 24 countries that make up Flying Solo. DJ duo, designers, and Flying Solo members Coco and Breezy also collaborated with Farren Jean Andrea to create a dynamic soundtrack for the runway show, setting a vintage party vibe that harkened back to iconic runways of the 80s. Model Alina Baikova opened the show in a full look from designer CHAE New York, with hair, makeup and nails sponsored by ECRU and Snailz.

Farren Jean Andrea is a dynamic young creative most noted for his recent covers with Bella Hadid and Rihanna in PAPER Magazine and styling work with contemporary industry icons that includes Bella Hadid, Kehlani, Jhene Aiko, and more. The partnership marks the brand’s first New York Fashion Week show under Farren Jean Andrea’s creative direction and the first time Flying Solo brings their seasonal runway show to the main stage at Pier 59 Studios, a venue that has played host to cutting-edge talent form Delpozo to Yeezy.

Furthering their dynamic list of partnerships, Flying Solo’s NYFW show was supported by ECRU hair and make up, Snailz nails, and HYPNO, provding photo booths both backstage and for the shows’ after party. Guests also enjoyed gift bags provided by Envy Apples, Ren Clean Skincare, and Patchology.

MORE ON FLYING SOLO.

Eurasian Vogue has previously reviewed Flying Solo and watched with great joy the growth the company has made.

In this time of struggling retail Flying Solo has created a model that is more than a clothing store - it's a proven successful new "retail" business model where a diverse community of fashion designers have banded together to launch revolutionary retail experience that is better for both designers and customers.

Coming into year two, Flying Solo's taken their idea from a 2500 square foot storefront to a massive 7000 square foot West Broadway flagship in prime SOHO real estate. Fueled and operated by 60+ designer members, Flying Solo provides a supportive structure that includes their retail store a huge pool of stylists, press and buyers, marketing budget, manufacturing resources, and work/office space. The retail experience is a delight for the customer who gets to personally interact and connect with new designers under one roof. Each season culminates with a NYFW runway presentation that not only gives the designers an opportunity to reach a bigger audience, but is a celebration of how FLYING SOLO's business model allows for independence, profitability and growth.

Hoodie and wide leg tracksuit pants by TwentyTees.com
@eurasian_vogue

If you're looking to update and elevate your off duty look, take a look at the hoodie. Previously seen as just an item to curl up in for a cosy weekend at home, the hoodie has recently had a makeover. Having been reimagined by designers such as Rag and Bone, the garment previously associated with casual teenage wear has had a rebirth. Paired with everything from workwear trousers, to over the knee boots, the hoodie is no longer just an item to store away for quiet nights at home.
