In the second part of 'The Perfect Weekend in Hertfordshire, England' (after staying at The Grove for one perfect night) I’m taking you just a ten minute drive to a ‘must-see' for any Harry Potter fans, The Harry Potter Studio Tour at Leavesden Studios.

As Warner Bros’ opens its doors to the making of the 8 movies, fans will be able to experience the making of Harry Potter in all its magical glory with real sound stages and the actual set where the movies were filmed. Not only that but you’ll be able to see the costumes and incredible props up close and take a peek into all your favourite places in the movie.

As you step in to the studio, you’ll take a walk down the hallway where you can rent an audio guide to give you even more information about the movies and behind the scenes information.

Picture

As you enter the start of the tour, you’ll be introduced to a muggle who will get you ready for your day, as you hear about the movies, their popularity and worldwide release. You’ll then be led into a cinema, where the cast will walk you through some of their favorite moments on set and their memories growing up playing the famous characters. As the clip ends the curtain will rise and you’ll be faced with the incredible grand doors of the Grand Hall dinning room which, unlike a lot of sets is truly as grand and stunning as it looks in the movies.

The tour will take you on a magical exploration of the costumes, props, including how they made the snow look so authentic, the potions classroom and even a chance to board the Hogwarts Express on Platform 9¾ and the opportunity to take a photo of you walking through ‘the wall’ ahead of your journey.

Be warned though, some of the magic may burst for you as you’ll be let into some of the movie's secrets, seeing how the SFX made characters such as Hagrid appear to be a giant, a close up look at the motorised Thestral, how they animated Dobby, a walk through the Forbidden Forest where you’ll get up and maybe a little too close to Aragog and you’ll even be able to hop on a broomstick against a green screen and see yourself fly through the air.

All this comes before sampling some Butter Beer at the studios cafe and stepping outside to visit 4 Privet Drive and walking into Harry Potter’s uncle and aunts home and see the closet under the stairs that Harry Potter used to live in and sit in the car driven by Harry Potter. In the winter months you can take a walk through the snow storm created outside the houses in the neighbourhood!

Next, the tour lets you walk through Diagon Alley. Feel the atmosphere of the winding and cobbled streets that transports you to feeling like you're standing right in the middle of one of the movies.

After walking the alley, you'll be lead to one of the most moving and breathtaking moments of your day and the finale of the tour. As you walk up a slope before finding yourself hovering above the entire Hogwarts model, as the stunning Harry Potter theme song by John Williams plays. The screens that are displayed around the outer edge of the barriers show just how the model was used in the movie as well as showing you how the incorporation of green screen technology was used to create scenes such as Harry Potter flying on his broomstick during the quidditch games.

This years 91st Academy Awards saw the first year since 1989 that the Oscars has gone host free. It was also one of the closest runs for Best Picture we've seen in some time, with the very worthy Green Book taking home the honour.

The fashion on display also
didn't disappoint with metallics and fuchsia being a popular colour for the night. Gemma Chan looked particularly stunning in a Maison Valentino gown, whilst Laura Harrier wore a breathtakingly beautiful ethically made gown, a Louis Vuitton creation by Nicolas Ghesquiere. Check out some of the best dressed of the night below!

Lady Gaga accessorised the gown with a necklace that housed a whopping $30 million USD diamond which was once worn by Audrey Hepburn. The diamond, which is a 128.54-carat Tiffany & Co. is simply named the “Tiffany diamond”

On February 9th 2019, Flying Solo welcomed over 600 guests at their fifth New York Fashion Week show at Pier 59 Studios.

I’ve been a huge fan of Flying Solo since their inception and have loved seeing them go from strength to strength. Now in their fifth show it’s always one of the highlights on my NYFW calendar as they present both womenswear and menswear as well as accessories from some of the most innovative and exciting designers.

This show saw model/influencer Paulinha Sampaio headline as they showcased a wide and diverse range of models.

Founded by two designers themselves and in just over two and a half years since its opening, Flying Solo has proven to be one of the biggest fashion platforms and has launched the careers of many independent designers.

Created as a unique, curated fashion retail incubator and showroom operated by a selection of talented, independent designers, Flying Solo is closing the gap between designers and consumers while exposing collections to press and media.

THE PERFECT WEEKEND IN HERTFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND: THE GROVE

2/20/2019

Picture
The Grove Hotel

We all know from either first hand experience or have heard about the joys of London, England. The bright lights and historical city. The theatre, the atmosphere and the electricity of the place is something I associate with my childhood and adulthood that hold some of my most treasured memories. However there is so much more to England than the capital, with so many places in the home counties that people don’t know about and I’m excited to bring one of them to you today!

In fact it’s the county that I grew up in, Hertfordshire. The county that has both rolling hills of countryside as well as the movie studio they filmed Harry Potter in and one of England’s most beautiful and historical hotels, The Grove. These are the two places I’d like to introduce to you to. With the perfect weekend away at The Grove, followed by the thrilling Harry Potter Studio Tour at Leavesden Studios just a ten minute drive from the hotel which I'll talk about in my next instalment!

My first memories of The Grove were from my 21st birthday. I was looking for a special place to go to celebrate and The Grove was the only place that I felt would truly be a memorable occasion for such an event. It also happens to be a birthday where I have some of the fondest memories of my grandmother.

Drawing up to the beautiful grounds takes your breath away. The grand path that leads up to The Grove as you enter through the gates, followed by the sweeping driveway is simply stunning. In summer when the sun shines it lights up the beautiful surrounding countryside and in winter, especially at Christmas time when the magical Christmas lights sparkle in the wintery midst only make the historical house look even more spectacular.

Picture
The Grove's sweeping driveway

We visited The Glasshouse for my birthday meal and the memories of the incredible food, as well as the great atmosphere made the meal taste all the better. The dessert station was my grandmothers favourite. Always one to have had a sweet tooth, the array of treats available made her eyes light up as she sampled every single one! She was in heaven, as was I watching her enjoy every mouthful.

Picture
The back of The Grove

With The Grove being such a place of fond memories, I couldn’t wait to revisit, this time staying at The Grove overnight, sampling the afternoon tea and the Pop Up Colette restaurant.

For this particular weekend, I took my mum for a ladies weekend. Checking in to the hotel you can instantly feel how special it is.

The first house that was built on the site was in the 1400s, however The Grove as we know it today is an eighteen Century building that has seen some incredible changes over that period of time, making it the perfect location for those who like both a historical building but one with all the benefits of its modern updates.

THE DELUXE MANSION

We are shown to our room for our stay, the stunning Deluxe Mansion room with its modern 4 poster bed, red decor, and windows the length of the room that open out to The Grove's driveway and beautiful green landscape.

Inside is a wide screen TV mounted on the wall at the perfect height, a study work area, sofa area and cubed coffee table with fashion magazines and other leisure reading material.

To the left of the room is the double sliding doors that lead to the spacious bathroom with its gorgeous free standing bath, double sink and conveniently placed stools to get ready.

AFTERNOON TEA

After taking a bath, using The Grove’s delicious smelling bath soaps, I get ready for afternoon tea served in the elegant lounge just downstairs from where the suite is situated.

Once again the luxurious lounge is the perfect balance of English elegance with some modern updates. With the airy room, its white open space and glass tables, the lounge restaurant feels spacious and homely at the same time, adding to the ambience with a harpist who plays softly in the background.

The Grove's Selection of cucumber, salmon and egg sandwiches- The Pescatarian option!

We sit down to begin our tea and we are in for a treat. I can honestly say, I’ve never had anyone take care of me at an afternoon tea, who knew more about the specifics of each tea than our tea sommelier, Vera, who ran through the blends, the process of making the tea and brought out the tea boxes for us to smell, inspect and even taste!

I began with Granny’s Garden. A blend of orange, mango pineapple and kiwi exotic fruits, with rhubarb and pure vanilla. It was literally good enough to eat as we sampled the mango, pineapple and vanilla extracts from the loose tea leaves from the box.

Their new cake selection added to the menu just two days prior to our visit, are pure decadence and simply melted in the mouth.

Both sandwiches and cakes have as many refills as you require and you can try as many teas as you’d like to sample. It was by far one of the best afternoon teas I’ve had, and I truly can’t recommend it highly enough.

POP UP RESTAURANT AT COLETTE'S

Picture
Pop Up Restaurant at Colette's : The Grove, UK
Picture

As if we weren’t spoiled enough by the afternoon tea, we took a few hours to enjoy the stunning grounds of The Grove before heading to dinner at the wonderful Colette’s Pop-Up restaurant where the style of dining is small plates.

It’s perfect for those who like to try an array of dishes and spoil your taste buds with a selection of sharing plates. The atmospheric restaurant with its wooden decor, and homely vibes is giving the idea of fine dining a modern makeover.

Speaking to Colette’s Chef Ross Bott after our meal about the style of dining, he tells me, “I believe it’s the way contemporary fine dining is going. Yes, you’ll always have traditional fine dining but I really do believe small plates is the way modern dining is headed. How many times do you have a taster menu where you actually like everything? This way you can choose the dishes you like.”

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Stacy Fan with Chef Ross Bott

Choose from the menu we did, with dishes including the flaked salmon rilettes, that was perfectly balanced, rich in flavor yet remained light at the same time, to the non-traditional fish and chips, with a flaky cod that was seasoned with salt and vinegar scraps (a memory from the Chef’s own midlands childhood) that made each bite melt in your mouth perfection. The turbot “en papillote” with brown shrimp beurre noisette and charred leaks, pave of mushroom with black truffle, the truffle macaroni and cheese and the walled green vegetables that came straight from The Grove's very own gardens all complimented one another beautifully. What was so genius about all the dishes were the familiarity of the plates, but with each one, Chef Bott had put his own unique take on them, making them both full of flavor and personality.

Baked Marshmallow

Ending the meal with two items I’ve never seen on a dessert menu before, coconut panna cotta with spiced mango (uniquely made dairy-free with coconut milk) and my personal favorite, baked marshmallow with cranberry compote designed to ignite memories of roasting marshmallows over a bonfire as a child. Bringing back the fun in food, and reminding us of childhood memories with an adult twist. What could be better than that?

THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY

Picture

After a blissful nights sleep in the Deluxe Mansion's four poster bed, and before checking out there was time to have some breakfast. With everything from omelettes and eggs of any kind to the fresh fruit bar, smoothies, yogurts, cereals as well as all the ingredients to make up a perfect full English breakfast including vegetarian quorn sausages, the breakfast was the perfect end to our stay.

Picture

The restaurant even provided fresh honeycomb, homemade yogurt fruit parfait and introduced the new way to drink tea with T-Sticks. Simply sit them in hot water for two to three minutes for a mess-free cup of tea!

Everything at The Grove from beginning to end was perfect. From the restaurants on offer, to the beautifully decorated room and the friendly and helpful staff. The hotel even offers a full selection of spa treatments if you really want to be pampered during your stay.

The Grove is the most beautiful hotel outside of London for the ultimate English country retreat. Having spent this weekend together with my mum made it even more precious. My mother also loved my 21st birthday and sharing that special occasion with my grandmother, who has now sadly passed away. However just as with my grandmother, this weekend will hold memories we shall look back on and treasure for years to come.

With thanks to The Grove for their wonderful help during our stay.

TADASHI SHOJI F/W 19 COLLECTION

2/7/2019

Picture
On February 7th, 2019 Tadashi Shoji’s F/W 19 collection was debuted at Spring Studios - Gallery 1 in New York.

Fall 2019 tells the story of travels through Southeast Asia. Reflecting the beauty of the land through the collections luxurious material, whilst the architecture is mirrored through the pieces silhouettes.

Picture

Resembling the visual rhythm of Southeast Asia's layered roofs, with pleated-tulle tiers and  pronounced seams and the stupas with its hemispherical structure and spires are echoed in the beautiful textures.

The tailored draping is the influence of Buddhist monks who frequent the temples. Their robes made unique from one another by the difference in their folds. Depending on the region, lineage and temple they originate from, as the method of draping holds as much history in their technique as the temples themselves.

Tadashi Shoji has managed to perfectly embody the essence of Southeast Asia with his use of color and materials such as the elegant gold details and silk brocades that all symbolise the grace and beauty of the culture. Taking the broad spectrum of Asian dress, but finding the common ground in their elegance and femininity.

Picture
The one shouldered folds are influenced by the shawl like sabai.

Picture

Capturing the rich world of Southeast Asia, a blend of mystery and beguiling nature and the never ending places to explore, starting with the inspiration of floating markets, powerful landscape and architecture.

Tadashi Shoji’s inspiration is beautifully reflected in this stunning collection, still staying true to the pieces synonymous with the designer. That of femininity, delicate materials and all the while retaining a strength that reflects todays modern woman.
