Denim jackets are such a staple in our closets, especially in the summer months. Worn with everything from a slip dress, double denim, to black trousers, the jacket will see you right through summer and beyond!

Why not give double denim a try this summer? Wear an oversized denim jacket over some boyfriend jeans. Add some color by wearing a red t-shirt underneath and matching accessories.

An oversized denim jacket is the perfect choice to throw on over a pair of summer shorts, and bralette or bikini for a beach day. Add a wicker bag and straw hat to make the look even more summer ready.

An oversized denim jacket is the ideal jacket to take away on vacation. Comfortable enough to wear on the plane (and large enough to be worn over a sweatshirt for cold flights) and can be worn with all of your summer wardrobe including your summer dresses, used as a beach cover up, or over an evening dress for nights.

The easiest way to dress down a frilly summer skirt is to wear it with an oversized denim jacket.

BODY SHAMING IS FOR LOSERS

Photo credit - Chiara Ferragni Instagram (the women on Ferragni's bachelorette party who were unbelievably labeled 'fat' by an Italian publication)

Last week Chiara Ferragni, the famous Italian influencer, turned businesswoman (taking the helm of TBS Crew as Chief Executive Officer in 2017) and new mum, went on her bachelorette party to Ibiza.

Ferragni, known for letting her followers in to every aspect of her life, from relationship breakups, to her engagement, pregnancy and her journey in to motherhood and everything else in-between, as expected, shared her time away in Ibiza with us. From partying on a yacht, to videos of her and her friends dancing in bikinis as they laughed with unfiltered joy.

Instead of reporting only on what fun the women (and men) were having, instead one of the most well known Italian newspapers slammed her (female) friends bodies. Calling the women ‘fat’ before going on to analyze their bodies, from the size of their behinds to the extra pounds they felt they carried.
Picture

Ferragni quickly hit back at the newspaper, telling her 13.5 million followers,
This article on the Italian most famous newspaper came out saying my friends were happy at my bachelorette even if they weren’t SKINNY and in SHAPE. I think it’s DISGUSTING to give messages like that, especially when so many girls are struggling with their body intensity and self confidence
Ferragni went on to say she’s never felt perfect but she was always lucky to feel “Confident in my own skin.” Continuing,
Women have such a hard time feeling beautiful because of so many reason’s. As a role model for so many women I always try and share the message that they mostly have to feel confident. That’s why I am beyond sickened to read such a wrong message shared by such an important newspaper. Different is beautiful. Not perfect is beautiful. Happy is beautiful. Confident is beautiful. Don’t let others bring you down or tell you who you are, EVER. #bodyshamingisforlosers”

Ferragni couldn’t have said it better or with more passion. No publication, or anyone for that matter should be allowed to pass judgment on others. However what’s even more dangerous about the article was not one of the girls on Ferragni’s trip could have been deemed even remotely ‘fat’. However someone reading this, even if not Ferragni’s friends themselves, could send them on a dangerous downward spiral.

Which brings me to the point of where we are with the media and social media today. Those in the spotlight posting pictures are instantly faced with some form of judgment in the comments. Ferragni posted an image of her in a skintight dress (above) and one of her followers asked, “Are you pregnant again?” To which Ferrani replied, “Nope girl just gimme time to get my original shape. I had a kid 4 months ago.”

Picture

And it isn’t just slamming women for being ‘too large’. Another celebrity with a strong Instagram following, Whitney Port, posted a photo of herself in a bikini (below) with her one year old son and the comments asking her to eat something ensued.

Somethingnavy founder, Arielle Noa Charnas has also faced backlash for being seen as too skinny, with people outright trolling her on social media. Previously one to let the comments go, she eventually had to start blocking people to keep the comments at bay. And rightly so, she’s a responsible mother of two girls and good genes clearly run in her family.

It seems like a no win situation for women. Lose it too fast and you're accused of starving yourself, too slowly and you're asked if you're pregnant again.

However the pressure new mums feel to lose weight immediately after she’s left the hospital has been hyped up so much as a result of the media, and now even the non famous on facebook and IG seems to have the not so humble, humble brag such as ‘Slowly getting back to it,’ as the new mum stands on her head as she states how she’s just doing the easy yoga moves for the next few weeks. It’s all-over-the-place.

I’m not saying don't post pictures of yourself post baby, far from it, clearly I'm a fan of the women who do. You should be proud of your bodies, but perhaps be mindful of the caption you put next to the photo. The next person scrolling through might be struggling so hard to lose weight after their baby and the context of these photos only help perpetuate a vicious circle which feed the media and their narrative.

My goal has always been to give spotlight to new designers, particularly female business owners. And I hope at least, I’ve always done it in a healthy way that gets some eyes on people who are creating pieces that empower women, fashion that is both moral and sustainable, but also one that allows you to put your best foot forward

I know it’s a dangerous rabbit hole to go down as we seek inspiration on social media and, admittedly, I'm part of the industry plugging trends and focusing on fashion, but my goal has always been to give spotlight to new designers, particularly female business owners. And I hope at least, I’ve always done it in a healthy way that gets some eyes on people who are creating pieces that empower women, fashion that is both moral and sustainable, but also one that allows you to put your best foot forward, by designers who are true artists and slog away in this cut throat industry because of their passion.  Not because they are shallow narcissistic people, in fact quite the opposite can be found.

There is nothing wrong with caring about how we look and enjoying fashion. I’ve always said it’s a form of art, self-expression and for me, a way to remember special occasions. I always remember what I wore on certain days that were of importance to me and it reminds me of that day. How I felt, like a diary that hangs in my wardrobe.

We are, after all, allowed to feel like our best selves, and it’s not shallow to want to put makeup on, an outfit that makes us feel good about ourselves, or express who we are and what we feel through what we decide to wear, just as long as we know our self worth doesn’t live and die by it. And ironically enough I believe the biggest fashion bloggers out there, (Ferragni and Charnas, I'm looking at you) truly know that. Charnas has often posted in her Instastories, pictures of her post baby, baby bump commenting on what a great angle can do for you, or her honesty about her feelings about her scar post c-section with the hashtag #neverphotoshop (above)

It’s unbeliebably clichéd to write, but it is so important to remember that truly it is beauty from the inside that makes someone shine on the outside, and that it’s so imperative we be mindful with our words, support one another and do our best to raise each other up, and not tear each other down.

EASY TIPS TO ORGANIZE YOUR LIFE

If you’re beginning to feel that even the simplest tasks each morning are tiring you out before you’ve even left the house, here are some tips on how to get your life a little bit more organized, from getting your outfits ready the night before, to a few things you can do in the home to keep things in order.

Prepare the night before

OUTFIT

PREPARE YOUR OUTFIT: Whether it’s going to work or a brunch with friends, get your outfit ready the night before. There’s nothing worse than waking up, feeling like you have nothing to wear and getting yourself tired and stressed out before you’ve even left the house. It will ruin your morning and can even knock your self-esteem if you’ve tried a few outfits on that for whatever reason, aren’t working for you that morning.

HANG YOUR OUTFIT: Either on the closet door or on a
section of your wardrobe rack if you have space, with your shoes and bag next to it and you’ll feel instantly less stressed having everything prepared.

DRESS FOR THE OCCASION

WORKDAY OR BRUNCH WITH THE GIRLS? PREPARE YOUR LOOK:

If it’s just a regular day at work pull an outfit that you know is workwear appropriate for your office, but if you have a special meeting or interview, be sure to choose something that will make you feel like your best self. Your outfit really can make a big difference to how you feel, giving you confidence and putting your best foot forward for the day.

Be sure to try your outfit on the day before: Iron it and hang it. Going straight from work to bar? Prepare by wearing an outfit that will work from day to night and add a statement necklace in your bag to throw on with your dress to jazz it up for the evening. Pack a clutch in your work bag for after hours so you don't have to carry your big work bag around with you.

PREPARE YOUR BAG

When sorting your outfit out for the next day, get your bag ready at the same time with all your essentials you'll need for the next day.

ORGANIZE YOUR BAG

If you like to switch your bags around, get a small pouch that you can keep all your essentials inside, for instance lip balm, credit cards, emergency touch up kit like concealer, safety pins incase you pop a button and lipstick. This way you can easily transfer items from one bag to another without having to worry you’ve left anything behind.

SET UP YOUR COFFEE THE NIGHT BEFORE / PACK YOUR LUNCH

If you’re a fan of filtered coffee, put it on a timer to be ready for when you wake up. The smell might even help you get out of bed! Taking lunch to work? Have that packed in the fridge the night before too.

PLAN ON WORKING OUT THE NEXT DAY?

If so, get your workout gear ready as well as your gym bag packed the day before. It’s surprising what a difference it will make if you have your gym wear ready to go. The motivation will be amplified and saves you searching the next day to find your gym kit.

TIPS ON GETTING READY

WAKE UP TEN MINUTES EARLIER

Someone that always tends to run a few minutes behind? Try setting your alarm ten minutes earlier and get up when it rings. You’ll be amazed at how much those extra ten minutes can make, so much less stressful than running around getting ready, worrying you're going to be late.

MAKEUP

It might seem like an odd tip to include in organizing your life, but if you wear makeup daily, the way you do your makeup can save you time. If you’re a fan of wearing eyemake up, do this first before applying the rest of your makeup. If you do your eye shadow last, it can drop on to the rest of your face, causing you to have to re-do your foundation and waste time correcting it. By doing your eyemake up first, you can use a wet wipe and correct any dropped eyeshadow, and then you can go on to do your foundation.

ORGANIZING YOUR HOME

There are several things you can do at home that will help de-stress your life.

A TIDY CLOSET

One of the best ways to make yourself feel more organized is to have a tidy closet. You'll save so much time being able to find everything easily if your items are organized.

Arrange your closet by:

Pulling everything out to start with. It might seem chaos when doing it but it’s the best way to organize everything. Once you've pulled everything out, lay them in piles according to type.

TOPS

Start by pulling out your tops. Arrange them by:

-Evening tops
-Day tops

You can then separate them by :
Blouses
T-shirts
Tank tops.

Then go and arrange them by color. You’ll be amazed at how much easier it is to see what you have and save you time rummaging around.

PANTS AND SKIRTS

Arrange them by :

Jeans (hang them separately by bootcut, cropped etc.)
Work trousers
Evening trousers
Capris etc.

SKIRTS

Organize by:

Day casual short
Day casual midi
Day casual Maxi
Day smart (lunches etc)
Workwear skirts – Pencil skirts
Evening skirts / Long / Midi / Short

DRESSES

Similar to skirts arrange by:

Day casual short
Day casual maxi
Day smart
Workwear skirts – Pencil skirts etc
Evening dresses / Long / Midi / Short

SWEATSHIRTS

Fold sweatshirts and knits by color and type or hang them if you have room, and again arrange them by category and style.

DAY / NIGHT OUTFIT SAVERS

Picture
Photo credit: Stacy Fan (Eurasian Vogue)

In your wardrobe it’s always a good idea to have a few outfits hanging up ready to wear for different occations. There might be times you didn't prepare an outfit the night before for work and over sleep  or you get a last minute call from friends to go for breakfast or a last minute evening out. If you have a few outfits ready in your closet that are your go-tos you’ll be able to get dressed really quickly and know you’ll feel comfortable in what you’re wearing.

Good categories for your go-to outfits:

-Work appropriate outfit
-Brunches / days out with friends
-A smart evening outfit

PRACTICAL WAYS TO ORGANIZE YOUR HOME

ELECTRONICS

Buy a multi plug panel that fits all your plugs on one. It will save you time having to constantly switch plugs in and out, or even save you from thinking you're charging your phone when you’ve pulled the plug out and forgot to plug it back in.

Picture

USE THE NOTES / REMINDER LIST ON YOUR PHONE

Utilizing the Notes App or Reminder list on your phone will help keep your to-do list organized. You can easily pull it up when you need to check what you’ve got to keep on top of.

Organize it by home/ work to do / home admin etc / (credit card payments, booking flights/ items you need to pick up / phone calls you need to make). Then create a list for work items of things you need to do and other categories specific to you and your needs.

Shopping list: You can also keep a shopping list on there of items you regularly buy. Instead of always re-writing your list, you can just pull it up and re-purchase them. If you buy online you can keep a saved list on your online account and just hit 'buy again' to make life easier.

LIFE WITH A BABY

If you have a baby or children, the above ways to organize can also be said for having a baby. Organize your children’s closet by onesies / T-shirts / Sweaters / Trousers etc.

ORGANIZE THEIR CLOTHES / DIAPER BAG / BACKPACK

Similar to your own wardrobe, get your children’s clothes out the night before. It will be a real time saver. If your baby is still in diapers, prep the diaper bag the night before.

Make sure:

You have enough diapers, diaper cream / spare set of clothes/ set of bottles with formula / chill bag ready for pumped milk/ food pouches / snacks / clean spoon, bib and bowl. If your children are at school, organize their backpacks the night before with packed lunches etc ready in the fridge.

FINALLY- GET A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP

If you can, go to bed at a decent time. De-stress before by keeping your phone, computers etc out of the bedroom and try and give your eyes a break from technology for at least 30 minutes before bed. It makes a huge difference from a restful night, to one filled with thoughts of things you have to do the next day.
