THE RETURN OF TIE DYE

There are a few things that I thought we would never see a return of and tie dye was one of them! However it’s back and in a big way! Beyonce kicked off the trend again last year when she wore a tie dye mini dress during her vacation in Italy with Jay-Z and this year we’ve seen it on a number of celebrities including Gigi Hadid during Coachella.

It was all over the Spring runway, with everyone from Stella McCartney, Prada and R13 inspired by the reinvented print. It’s been given a little make over since it’s inception in the 60s and then its first revival in the 90s.

We’ve got R12 using it on blazers, as seen on Kai Gerber on the runway, Ralph Lauren using it on sweaters whilst Prada and Proenza Schouler gave it a feminine makeover. Prada used it on A-line skirts and delicate bags whilst Proenza Schouler used it on denim, oversized shirts and high neck fitted dresses. Influencers took to the street with their own take on it, with Arielle Charnas loving the trend on everything from sweaters, blazers to oversized shirts.

The look is best when paired with neutrals. Think a tie dye blazer with light wash fitted denim, or for a casual weekend look, pair a sweater with cropped denim and slides for a fun brunch look!

Today's episode of Family Style sees Stacy Fan interview the stunning Mayly Tao AKA the Donut Princess!

DK's donut's is a beautiful Chasing the American dream story and has only been made more inspiring by just how far Mayly has taken the business.

Mayly Tao's great uncle, Ted Ngoy, a Cambodian refuge came to the US in the 70s and got into the donut business and became the owner of hundreds of donuts shops, bringing joy to so many people with the donuts through the universal language of food!

Incredibly, Ngoy went on to sponsor other Cambodian refugees by teaching them the business and helped them open their own stores. Because Ngoy used the now infamous pink boxes associated with donuts, so did everyone else and he became known as the Donut King!

Picture

Back in the 80s Ngoy taught Mayly's parents the business and they went on to open their first donut store in 1981. Around 2009, Mayly’s brother took over the business and after graduating Mayly joined the family business. After modernising it and bringing in her creative and ambitious vision, she soon became known as the Donut Princess!

Her Uncle's legacy still lives on through the pink boxes, not just in DK's Donuts but all over LA. Mayly has now updated DK's donuts boxes to create a fun eye catching and recognisable branding and design!

Check out our episode today as I indulge in some of the most mouth watering donuts and you get to see Mayly whip some up in the Kitchen!

RIHANNA'S NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH LVMH BREAKS RECORDS

Rihanna is breaking history this week with the launch of her partnership with Fenty Maison and LVMH. On Friday, May 10th 2019, Chairman and CEO of LVMH, Bernard Arnault, made the announcement that this Spring they will be launching a new Maison and Robyn Rihanna Fenty would be taking helm as creative director. The launch will not only see Rihanna be the first new house created by LVMH since Christian Lacroix in 1987, it’s also the first time that a woman has created an original brand with the group and the first time a woman of color has been at the top of the LVMH Maison. A Maison is the way in which LVMH organize their brands, of which they have 70 and 6 different sectors.

Rihanna has already proven her success working with LVMH. She began her partnership with the luxury market leaders two years ago back in 2017, in their cosmetics and beauty sector with the launch of her Fenty Beauty Brand. The collection includes 40 shades of foundation in order to make the line an all inclusive one. It worked, Fenty Beauty saw a turnover of $562 Million USD in their first full year.

Fenty Maison will be based in France. Speaking about the new deal on her Instagram Rihanna said, “Big day for the culture. This is proof that nothing is impossible.”

Picture

This deal really is a huge feat for Rihanna and in fact a change to the fashion industry. LVMH and indeed many luxury design houses have been slow to diversify the creatives at the helm of brands. In 2018, when Virgil Abloh took over as menswear artistic director of LVMH’s Louis Vuitton he broke history by being the only black designer to be at the helm of a heritage fashion house and to this day still remains the only one.

This news is certainly a step in the right direction to changing this. With Rihanna’s massive social media following and her authenticity, this will hopefully help make the fashion industry more open to bringing in some diversity to their houses. Particularly as this new deal with Rihanna and LVMH is a true partnership. Not just being the face of a brand makes Rihanna’s partnership extremely different to any previous celebrity deals.

Fans will be able to see the first collection late Spring debuting in Paris.

ANNA WINTOUR PAYS TRIBUTE TO KARL LAGERFELD #THEMET

5/7/2019

Picture
The theme of the Met Gala this year was ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’. Inspired by the Susan Sontag's essay, in which Sontag defines it by saying, “Love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.”

For this years Met, Anna Wintour wore a feathered look, embellished with crystals, a creation made by Chanel. The dress was significant for several reasons. Not only was Wintour pulling the theme back to its original inspiration, Sontag, in which her essay states, “Camp is a woman walking around in a dress made of 3 million feathers" and thus Wintour's dress inception was born, she was also paying a beautiful tribute to Karl Lagerfeld in the process.

Lagerfeld had begun making the dress before he passed away, Wintour told reporters at the Met, “Karl made it for me, and Virginie finished.”

Wintour was referencing Virginie Viard, who has worked along side Lagerfeld for over thirty years and has now taken the helm as artistic director.

Wintour spoke earlier this year at the Women in the World Summit 2019 saying how devastated she had been to learn of the passing of Lagerfeld. The day Wintour found out she was taking an early morning flight from London to Milan. Finding out by reading the papers that day she said she just, "started to bawl" before continuing, "
Karl was just this force. There was no one, there is no one like Karl; he was a completely exceptional person.” And there was no better way to pay tribute to him.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE OTHER BEST DRESSED FROM THE NIGHT!

Lady Gaga!

Picture

We can't talk about the Met Gala without talk about Lady Gaga's red carpet looks, yes, that was plural- four to be exact and her incredible entrance that lasted 16 minutes! She was one of the first to arrive (after Anna Winour) and spent 16 minutes on the red carpet in a choreographed routine that saw her shrouded by dancers and the designer who created her dresses, Brandon Maxwell, who helped her shed each look before revealing the next. Lady Gaga who is one of the co-chairs of the gala and who helped pick the theme, clearly nailed it. Posing up a storm up and down the pink carpet stairs in each look! She absolutely won the night.
